Elmore Social Support Group pays tribute to much-loved member Ken Rogers

Bendigo Community Health Services would like to pay tribute to our much-loved Elmore Social Support Group member Ken Rogers who passed away at the weekend.

Ken volunteered with our Social Support Group for 10 years before becoming a group member for the past four years.

Our Social Support Group co-ordinator Judy Ryan penned this tribute to honour Ken and all the work he has done for BCHS.

“Ken started volunteering for the BCHS Social Support Group in Elmore in 2006,” Judy said.

“Ken had retired from being a qualified cabinet maker and just moved to the area but still wanted to make a difference with what he knew how to do best. At the time the Social Support Group was looking for a volunteer for our men’s program ‘The Shed’ and Ken was welcomed aboard.

“He volunteered for the program and BCHS for 10 years.

“Ken always had a professional and friendly manner with all the members at the group and was always willing to help staff in whatever needed to be done.

Bendigo Christmas donations flowing our way will make such a huge difference to clients in need

We just wanted to say a huge thanks for the wonderful generosity already coming our way in the lead up to Christmas.

We suspect there’s going to be an even greater need for support this year given the times the community has endured.

The Uniting Church of Hallidays Point has provided a wonderful cash donation to help our staff provide valuable supports for families in need this festive season.

We will use this generosity for food and gift supports for clients who aren’t in a position to provide.

You see, it’s often the fact that a parent can’t provide for their family that does considerable ’emotional’ damage and that’s something we can help with through donations such as that from Hallidays Point.

Thank you!

And with kindness such as the anonymous family who dropped off this bounty of beauty products for our Strong Families team to help clients.

Every donation helps.

Rest assured your generosity makes a significant difference for those who face a very different Christmas due to personal circumstance.

Thank you again.

Bendigo 16 Days of Activism 2020 Calendar of Events – say NO to violence against women

Bendigo will recognise 16 Days of Activism from November 25 to December 10.

We call for an end to violence against women in all forms and support those who have experienced such behaviours.

All gender-based violence has no place in our community and must stop.

Bendigo Community Health Services traditionally walks behind our banner in the Bendigo Walk Against Violence each year. We have officially registered for the ‘virtual’ Walk Against Violence on November 25. To learn more click here

Bendigo Board Directors welcomed to Bendigo Community Health Services

UPDATE: Peter Leersen has resigned from the board for work-related reasons.

It’s exciting for us to welcome three new Board Directors.

Abhishek Awasthi, Dr Mark Morley and Peter Leersen were endorsed during the BCHS Annual General Meeting with standing Director Josh Pell returned.

Former Board Chair Geoff Bowyer, long-serving Board member Tom Bailey and Joolee Hughes leave the board.

Our Board Chair Vicki Pearce said the new directors brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the organisation.

“It’s so important to have a range of skills on our board to ensure we can continue to develop and improve all areas of our organisation to ensure we deliver the best quality care for our community. We look forward to seeing Abhishek, Mark and Peter bringing new ideas and initiatives to our Board,” Mrs Pearce said.

Abhishek Awasthi brings a wealth of experience to the Board of Directors, particularly in cultural diversity as a multicultural community leader for more than 10 years.

“Health and wellbeing are very important to me, personally and professionally. It is important that every member of the community has equitable access to health and wellbeing services, as and when required. In particular, the vulnerable members including the cultural, religious, racial and linguistic diverse community members. This is critical to make our communities more inclusive, welcoming, respectful and safer,” Mr Awasthi said.

Bendigo STI test video a bit of fun with a serious message – when was your last check?

We’ve had some fun making this little video for STI Testing Week.

The video is fun to get your attention but the message is very real – getting tested regularly for sexually transmissible infections is vital, particularly if you’re having casual sex or thinking about starting a family.

The test is easy and totally confidential.

Most STIs are easily treated but can have major health impacts such as infertility if left alone.

Bendigo BetterConsult system means you will get much more out of an appointment with our doctors

We are always looking for better ways to improve your healthcare.

So it’s exciting to let you know BetterConsult has arrived at Bendigo Community Health Services to improve the experience and service for people seeing our doctors at the medical practice.

All clients making an appointment with one of our doctors will now get an SMS text message with a link to a BetterConsult questionnaire to fill out before arriving to see your doctor.

The questionnaire is safe and secure and allows you to let us know the reason you want to see the doctor and any important information your doctor needs to know so they can be ready to make the most of your appointment and give you the best healthcare information possible.

This includes better information on possible treatments and more time to make sure you fully understand what you need to improve your health.

A HealthShare survey has found that more than half of patients who see their doctor actually end up talking about something totally different to why they made the appointment so with BetterConsult we’re getting the information we need before you arrive so you can have more time to talk about your healthcare.
